THE KUSARD-ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROJECT PROFILE - 2009

The KUSARD Environmental conservation project is an initiative being undertaken by KUSARD in collaboration with the kithangathini/Kituiuni region self help groups. The project is being implemented in kithangathini sub location, Kikoko location, Kilungu division, Makueni district, Eastern province in Kenya. The KUSARD organization in collaboration with the area self help groups identified, during one of our consultative meetings, a need for environmental conservation targeting the area rivers as well as depleted forest covers. The team established that;
The area had inadequate forest cover,
1.That the area rivers were drying up due to scanty rainfalls, a result of deforestation, 2.That majority of the area residents practiced bad agricultural habits that led to encroachment on the water catchments areas and riverbeds,
3.That the area residents were doing very little to combat desertification,
4.That there was no tree nursery in the sub location where community members could buy tree seedlings.
5.That the community relied on fire wood as fuel source.
6.That the administration and stakeholders had not initiated any meaningful effort to rectify the situation.

1)A View of part of Kithangathini location with inadequate
forest cover that the KUSARD- Kituiuni/Kithangathini Environmental
network project intends to plant trees.
2)We are also linking with Government extension officers
in educating farmers on the importance of agro- forestry
and control of soil erosion.
3)A section of Ilovoto River that has almost dried- up. Our project intends to rehabilitate these rivers by planting indigenous trees along their banks.Luckily The Ikuma River from which the Kituiuni Community Water Project catchment area is situated, still struggles to stay perennial and is one of the targeted rivers where rehabilitation work will be starting soon.
4)After several consultative meetings in 2008, KUSARD mandated the Kituiuni rescue youth group to mobilize the community to start the conservation project. (At that time KUSARD gave a donation of United States Dollars 200 towards the advancing of the conservation network project.)
Left, the Kituiuni Rescue Youth Self Help Group Executive Director . Michael M. Mwau hands over 40,000 tree seedlings potting bags to the areas Community volunteer to be sub-divided among the Kituiuni/Kithangathini network Self help Groups from KUSARD at the groups office.
As the lead organization the Kituiuni rescue youth started sensitizing the community members to form self help groups whose common objective was to establish tree nurseries and plant trees in their farms and near by government institutions and along the rivers. So far the network is made up of 10 self help groups, the area Primary Schools and Faith based Organizations. The Objectives of the KUSARD-Kituiuni/Kithangathini environmental conservation project is to:-
1.Rehabilitate the area rivers by planting environmental friendly trees near water catchment areas and along the river banks.
2.Educate the area residents on the importance of Agro forestry.
3.Sustain the community and its environment conservation efforts
4.Create linkages with Agricultural extension officer to acquire skills on soil conservation and good agricultural practices.
5.Unite the area residents in the establishment of tree nurseries and planting of the same.
6.Empower the community through tapping the natural resources of the region effectively.
OUR CONSERVATION INTERVENTION STRATEGIES
We have successfully established 8 nursery sites in 8 different villages in Kituiuni/Kithangathini sub-location. We have planted trees in 3 different primary schools, Kithangathini secondary school, the area churches and network members' households totaling to 5000. The leaders of the S.H.Gs meet once per month at Kituiuni Primary School to plan on the way forward of the network. In order to ensure success of the initiative the group received some funding of $200 from KUSARD-USA to facilitate the purchase of potting bags. We have been promised more support in the future to further strengthen the group's efforts. A few of the Self help groups at their nursery sites:-

Impact of conservation Through our conservation initiative the following are the achievement results:-
1.The communities awakening to conserve the environment.
2.Planting of 5000 seedlings in 5 institutions.
3.Planting of over 5000 young trees in the areas homesteads
4.Initiated awareness on the result of environmental deforestation and bad agricultural practices.
5.Other stakeholders have started showing their intention to chip in the initiative , i .e The national Agriculture and livestock extension project (NALEP) has embarked on supportive training and has given the area residents fertilizers and maize seeds to boost agricultural production were as the Greenbelt movement has trained the groups on good conservation practices.(Seen below are the kithangathini residents receiving fertilizers and maize seed from NALEP)
